Harnessing the Future: The European Commission's Bold Move in Renewable Hydrogen

The European Commission has recently taken a significant step towards fostering the growth and deployment of renewable hydrogen.

Date: 30. 11. 2023

This initiative, marked by the launch of the first auction under the European Hydrogen Bank, is part of a broader €3 billion subsidy scheme announced by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during the European Hydrogen Week. The scheme aims to stimulate green production methods, heralding a new era in renewable energy development.

Currently, €800 million is available through the Innovation Fund to subsidize hydrogen production, with an additional €2.2 billion expected early next year. This funding mechanism allows producers to bid for a fixed premium per kilogram of hydrogen produced, offsetting the higher costs associated with clean hydrogen production. Amidst these developments, the Clean Hydrogen Joint Undertaking, a key player in the sector, is redefining its role and identity to align with the evolving landscape of hydrogen-based initiatives and strategies within the EU.

The hydrogen sector's potential extends beyond traditional boundaries, with novel production processes like using plastic waste and seaweed being explored. These innovative approaches could address multiple environmental issues simultaneously.

Europe aims to produce and import 10 million tons of renewable hydrogen annually by 2030. However, high production costs and inadequate infrastructure are current barriers. To overcome these, the EU is engaging in international cooperation, including significant projects in Brazil, Africa, Latin America, and potential partnerships with Kazakhstan, Australia, and Oman.

As we stand at the cusp of a renewable energy revolution, the opportunities presented by these new budgets are immense. They are not just investments in technology but in a sustainable future.

Tiko Pro recognizes the potential of these developments and is committed to assisting companies in tapping into these funds. With our expertise and guidance, businesses can navigate this new landscape, harnessing the power of renewable hydrogen to drive innovation and growth.
