Call details:

Enhancing ecodesign and circularity of consumer electronics (Horizon Europe programme)

Fill out the form

Official call identifier: HORIZON-CL6-2027-01-CIRCBIO-01

Objective of the call

The objective of this call is to improve the ecodesign and circularity of consumer electronics. It supports new or improved product design that increases durability, reusability, reparability, upgradability, recyclability, and the use of recycled content, while reducing waste, emissions, and resource extraction.

Scope of activities

Projects should develop, test, and demonstrate ecodesign solutions for consumer electronics. Activities may include design for durability, reuse, repair, disassembly, separability, recycling, recycled content uptake, component reuse, easier dismantling, remanufacturing, and improved recovery of critical and strategic raw materials. Proposals should also assess incentives and business models that reward circular design and product durability, such as extended guarantees, VAT-related mechanisms, leasing, and product-service systems. Solutions must consider chemical safety, lifecycle environmental performance, consumer benefits, and relevant legislation.

Eligible applicants

  • Innovative SMEs, startups and enterprises aiming to scale and strengthen competitiveness
  • Public-sector organisations driving transformation and societal impact
  • Research and academic institutions commercialising knowledge

Consortia should include material and product manufacturers, consumer electronics producers, recycling and recovery actors, circular economy experts, business model developers, lifecycle assessment specialists, SSH experts, and consumer-focused organisations. Participation of SMEs and partners from countries with actual electronics production is encouraged.

Eligible costs

Eligible costs will take the form of a lump sum contribution under the Horizon Europe Lump Sum Model Grant Agreement. Activities may include:

  • Research and development of advanced photonic devices and circuits
  • Integration of novel materials and architectures
  • Prototype fabrication and testing
  • System-level validation in representative application domains
  • Performance benchmarking and optimisation
  • Dissemination and exploitation activities
